Scale Moods

Every scale has its own emotional fingerprint. Here's a quick guide to the character of the most common ones.

Major

Bright, happy, resolved. The default sound of pop, folk, gospel, and most children's songs — instantly familiar and uplifting.

Natural Minor

Sad, brooding, introspective. The dark counterpart to major, used everywhere from rock ballads to film scores when emotion runs deep.

Dorian

Cool and jazzy — minor with a hopeful lift. Beloved by jazz, funk, and modal rock for its sophisticated, slightly mysterious flavor.

Mixolydian

Bluesy and rootsy — major with a flat seventh. The sound of countless classic rock riffs, Celtic tunes, and southern grooves.

Blues

Gritty, soulful, expressive. The minor pentatonic with an extra 'blue note' that gives the blues, rock, and R&B their unmistakable bite.
